Saw this in the American Farmland Magazine, Winter 2008:

NEW OPPORTUNITIES IN CONSERVATION:
Are you an owner of farm or forestland interested in learning more about selling carbon credits? Farm, ranch and forest landowners of all sizes, in all parts of the country, are getting involved in carbon credit trading. Conservation practices that qualify include maintaining continuously no-tilled fields, establishing new grasslands or committing rangeland to an improvement program; reforesting land or planting new trees on forested land; and managing methane with digesters. To learn more, contact one of the following carbon credit trading programs:

AgraGate Climate Credits Corporation: 866-633-6758 or www.agragate.com

The National Farmers Union's Carbon Credit Program: 800-366-8331 or www.nfu.org

The Delta Institute: 312-554-0900 or www.delta-institute.org

Solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, and efficiency projects are eligible.

Value-Added Producer Grants

Learn eligibility and application requirements for Federal grant funding opportunities for agricultural-based value-added production. ONLY TROUBLE IS......
I think you cannot use any energy produced through this grant for your home.. only for your business. That is a major problem for small farms.... though not for big ones with separate books. It's worth a phone call to be sure of this. I checked it out at Farm and Forest last year and I'm pretty sure this is what I learned.

Subject: renewable energy and energy efficiency grant opportunity

Good Afternoon - Attached below please find information about an upcoming workshop in Manchester on USDA grant and loan guarantee funding for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in New Hampshire.

25% grant funds and up to 50% loan guarantee funds are available to assist agricultural producers and rural small businesses with costs for the purchase and installation of renewable energy systems and energy efficiency improvements. Solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, and efficiency projects are eligible.

Past grant awards under this program in NH have included $500,000 to a sawmill/lumber operation in Middleton to install a wood-fired co-gen (combined heat and power) system, $20,000 to a small business Jaffrey to install a wood pellet furnace, and $10,000 to a Laconia business to install energy efficient lighting.

This appears to be an excellent opportunity to obtain grant funding for green energy projects and I encourage those who are interested to attend this workshop.

Regards,

Jack

Hello group,

I just received this email from NH Sustainable Energy Association.....great news if it actually passes!! So be sure to contact members of the Science, Technology and Energy Committee ASAP!!

The email read as follows:

We are getting closer to creating a financial incentive bill for small renewable energy systems in NH! We know a lot of you are really interested in investing in a system and that you would appreciate some financial incentives to make it happen.

Here is the text of the bill:
http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/legislation/2008/HB1628.html

Public hearings for HB1628 start tomorrow at 2pm in the Legislative Office Building, Room 304, in Concord. If you would like your opinions on this bill heard, you can testify, call, or write to members of the Science, Technology and Energy Committee: http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/house/committees/committeedetails.aspx?code=H24

Here is an overview of the bill:

* $3/watt, with a maximum one-time payment of $6,000 or 50% of the system costs, whichever is less.
* Systems must be 5kW or smaller
* Systems must be installed in NH, on the owner's property, and built on or after January 1st, 2009.
* There will be an application process and equipment and installation will be required to meet certain standards.
* Funding for this program will come from the Renewable Energy Fund, established with moneys from the Alternate Compliance Payments from the Renewable Portfolio Standard, passed in 2007.

There is a $1,000,000 cap to the program, meaning about 170 systems a year will get funding.

Thank you for your help.

All...
Any of you get "The Furrow", a trade magazine put out by John Deere? The February issue is a special edition on Farm-Scale Energy. I'll bring my copy the next time we get together. I must confess that I haven't had any time to contribute much to the cause since our last meeting. January in the legislature gave credence to the legislation/sausage making analogy. What do you think about the possibility of, sometime in the mid term future, getting an expert from PSNH to do a presentation on the technical details of the electric distribution system/grid, with an emphasis on the problems/potential for renewable energy generators contributing to the establishment electrical system? I'd be proposing that it be done for, at least, several of the house/senate committees and an academic audience. Open to the public, of course.

Dick,
I think that having a utility rep come in and give us some info would be great. Unitil and the Coop might be interested as well.

Group,

Check out this website that's been created for the farming community in Mass. Lots of useful information (for MA of course) but also lends itself as a useful template or possible goal to shoot for as a group. The link is:
